Lift Chairs
Power Lift Chairs
Power lift recliner chairs offer many benefits for people with a variety of medical conditions as well as being the ultimate recliner/sleep chair for people without conditions. Some of the benefits are.
Ease of Use – Power lift chairs are easy to use with a handheld controller that positions the chair just the way you want.
Comfort – with the ability to adjust the chair to your specific comfort positions, it becomes the ultimate chair to relax, read, sleep, and watch TV regardless of any medical condition.
Increased Independence – Experience demonstrates how maintaining your independence reduces your risk of chronic disease, as well as anxiety and depression. The correct lift/recliner chair features countless postural positions, each of which adds freedom to different areas of your life. With the click of a button, you can go from sleeping to sitting, allowing you to take naps at your leisure without having to worry about assistance from others. Similarly, the lift setting helps you rise steadily to an almost standing position.
Helps with Postural Hypo-tension - With 10-30 percent of seniors experiencing postural hypertension, which causes a sudden and abrupt spike in blood pressure, you may worry about falling over due to an unexpected increase in blood pressure. Using a lift, you can rise slowly, giving your blood pressure a chance to stabilize and reducing the risk of fall-related fractures.
Reduces Edema – If you suffer from edema, which you may also refer to as swollen legs, mobility is more difficult and your risk of ulcers and leg discomfort increases. Using a lift chair, you can raise your legs to encourage fluid to move back to your heart, reducing edema and making life more comfortable.
Relieving Pressure Sores - More than 2.5 million people develop pressure sores in the U.S. each year (according to the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality) and each one, no matter how small, increases your risk of infection. One of the simplest ways to prevent pressure sores is through moving around. However, if you struggle with mobility or encounter an injury, moving becomes difficult. By using a lift chair, you can change your position throughout the day or use the lift position to rise from the chair and get your blood pumping. Pressure sores are most likely to occur in areas where bones push against the skin, such as your heels and lower back. Moving these areas throughout the day distributes pressure to other places, keeping your skin intact.
Reduces Muscle Aches - Whether your back is sore, or your shoulder feels tight, muscular aches affect many areas of your life. For example, those who suffer from back pain may experience a bad night’s sleep. Similarly, tight shoulders can prevent you from comfortably resting as you chat with friends or watch TV. Power lift chairs not only allows you to position your body in the most comfortable way but can be configured with multiple Heat and Massage settings that can enhance your circulation and tackle the pains that come with tight muscles.
Reduces Risk of Injury – Reduces the risk of injury to not only you but to those caregivers who assist in your care. The lift chair helps shift you into a position that makes it simpler for others to lift or assist with transfer to walkers, wheelchairs etc. With fewer contractions, you are more likely to maintain control once on your feet, which means you’re less likely to hurt yourself. If you suffer from osteoporosis or you have a joint replacement, you can spend less time fretting about broken bones and more time enjoying life around your home.
Helps with Relaxation - In addition to providing a comfortable place to nap, lift chairs can allow for deeper breathing. With a position that helps your lungs to open fully, while aligning your spine’s vertebrae, you benefit from larger breaths. Whether you actively engage in deep breathing exercises to wind down or passively benefit from it as you sleep, you’ll encounter a reduction in stress levels.
Types of Lift Chairs
There are basically three types of power lift chairs. Two-position, three position and infinite position.
Two-Position – Basic recline to about 45 degrees and can gently lift to assist in getting up from it. Typically used for reading and watching TV but not particularly good for napping, sleeping or chronic medical conditions.
Three-Position – These have better reclining capabilities to help with medical conditions, aid in relaxation, sleep and assist in lifting to a standing position.
Infinite-Position – These chairs provide the most positioning possibilities that can be adjusted to meet your specific medical conditions and/or comfort preferences. The positioning on these can include Zero-Gravity and Trendelenburg positions that evenly distributes your body weight and allows for your feet and legs to position above the heart for maximum comfort and relaxation.
What Type of Lift Chair is Right for Me?
The perfect chair for you depends on several factors. Basic thing like your height and weight is very important but it also is important to know if you have a long/short torso, long/short legs and what medical conditions and/or comfort objectives you are looking to achieve. Do you need a chair that will aid in relaxation and sleep, do you eat your meals in the chair, do you have pets that sit in the chair with you, etc. These and other factors need to be discussed when choosing the right chair with the right features and the right fabric.
Does Medicare pay for a Power Lift Chair?
Medicare and some other insurances allow for payment of a portion of the lift chair. Medicare will allow payment for the lift mechanism inside the chair but will not pay for the chair itself. They have a predetermined amount that they will pay for the mechanism, if the person using it meets specific medical necessity requirements. A special Certificate of Medical Necessity form (CMS-849) is required and a specific face-to-face visit with you physician is required. Your physician must complete the form and sign and date it.
